Nikka Whisky

In 1918, Masataka Taketsuru embarked alone on a long voyage to Scotland. In this distant land the secrets of whisky-making would be imparted to this young Japanese man, and here he would meet the woman who would become his bride.

Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, would go on to establish Nikka Whisky’s first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan in 1934. Surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and facing the coast of the Sea of Japan, Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malt.

Yoichi Whisky

The Yoichi distillery is located in its namesake city, located in Japan’s furthermost Island of Hokkaido. The distillery was built in the purest Scottish tradition. The founder of Nikka Whisky, Masataka Taketsuru was looking for a location to build his first distillery, with conditions resembling Scotland, and found Yoichi as one of the best location available in Japan.

Established in 1934, in the small eponymous coastal city of Yoichi, the distillery benefits from the city’s humid and rugged climate. The distillery is located 50km west of Sapporo city, known for its snow festival and host of the 1972 winter Olympics. Originally, the local peat bogs were the source of Yoichi’s subtle smoky notes, while the coastal climate gives Yoichi its gentle flavor.

Yoichi 12 Years

Sweet and easy to drink

Color: rich caramel
Nose: expect fruit notes – peach stands out and subtly floral. Then there’s rich vanilla custard, peat smoke and a hint of nutmeg spice
Palate: sweet, with peat smoke following swiftly afterwards. Light oak and developing fruit notes beneath
Finish: a little spicy and sweet with a hint of smoke

Senshin Recommends:

Take it neat and enoy the subtle peat.
