Yamazaki Distillery

Yamazaki Distillery Yamazaki is Japan’s first and oldest distillery, established in 1923 by Suntory’s founder Shinjiro Torii. Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky. Yamazaki is thus the birthplace of Japanese whisky.

Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, this region was formerly referred to as “Minaseno”, where one of the purest waters of Japan originates. Yamazaki is also home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of “The Way of Tea.” Yamazaki is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, providing a unique misty climate and one of Japan’s softest waters. The diversity of this region’s temperature and humidity creates ideal conditions for cask aging, known as the signature “Suntory Maturation.”

The Yamazaki Limited Edition 2014

The Yamazaki Limited Edition 2014 is composed of three single malts:

– a single malt aged 20 years in sherry casks made out of European oak ; these barrels were used for maturating red wines.
– another single malt aged 20 years in port wine casks made out of European oak ; these barrels were previously used for maturing port wines.
– a young single malt aged in bourbon barrels made out of American white oak.

The experts at Suntory lovingly created this composed whisky to be fruity and well-rounded, and only released slightly more than 10,000 bottles to the Japanese domestic market.

Senshin Recommends:

It is rare that this bottle is available out of the Japanese domestic market. 2 out of the 3 single malts have been aged for 20 years, giving this whisky a lovely complexity and body.

Considering the rarity of this bottle, you’re in luck if it’s in stock.
